Boddhi Satva: Teaching Acenstral Soul
I thought that Boddhi Satva’s music was probably more interesting than his conversation, before speaking to him, that is!! He does the music but he talks it too!

Boddhi was born in the Central African Republic but moved to Belgium in 2000, six years after the birth of his musical career. His relationship to Hip Hop was questionable until he fell in love with the sound of House music, and then it was deep enough to be taken very seriously. His passion, Deep House music, debatably the leading genre in South Africa, has been in the tongue of the country’s music makers, and their supporting acts, the dancers! Boddhi has received much love from South Africans over the past few years, with Mzansi DJs like Mzilikazi Wa Africa contacting him.

Making music and talking about music are dissimilar, I hear some people say. I will let my music do the talking, which means I can’t really illustrate it, regardless of my talent. Boddhi has changed the melody while we’ve been talking on about House Music. He is talking about Ancestral Soul.

“What we do is ‘Ancestral Soul’ you may call it House music, but you’re making it simple for everyone.”

“I don’t believe that you brothers and sisters are doing house music. You are doing what is called “My sound”, which is your sound. Ancestral Soul can’t be interpreted electronically. What we do is “Ancestral Soul” you may call it House music, but you’re making it simple for everyone. It comes, first and foremost, from Africa, that is not deniable. Africa has its own sound, extremely powerful sound, and it is making massive, massive noises around the world!”

It is official! Black Coffee and Culou De Song have made their mark universally. Every Tom, Dick and Harry is on their case. What is so special about the duo?
“Well, Black Coffee and Colou De Song, their vibe is absolutely massive. I respect all the brothers and sisters who produced their music, and all the Djs, but especially Black Coffee and Colou De Song. They mark their way and prove the ability to keep bringing quality!”

It looks as if Boddhi loves South African talent as much as we appreciate his music. The Offerings Recordings owner has already signed the South African, Lelethu Khumalo, to his label.

“She is the first artist from South Africa that I have signed, and I signed her for three singles. I’ve got a Colou de Song project on Offering too.”
Although he is an inspiration to Africans around the world, Boddhi believes that he is not someone or somewhere special. Having been signed by the world-renown and Grammy award winner, Louis Vega, and Yoruba boss, Osundale, both based in America, it shows that he has hassled his way up to the top.

“It takes a lot of pain and hassle, that’s for sure! I’m trying to make my way, to accomplish my own goal and, thankfully, I am signed with a record label where I can do things and push other people.”

When I heard his people call him “Machine” I didn’t get it, but now I do. Boddhi works so hard to live up to the expectations of bringing quality music to the world. He just can’ stop working, but unlike other Djs/producers, he is definitely not married to his studio. He has 50 releases at his disposal.
“That’s a lot of work and I do my best to promote each and every one properly. I am also doing a lot of production work for other artists in the R&B industry.”
Boddhi forewarns people not to try to be like him.
“Create your own identity off people that you respect. Be you and try to respect those people who were in the game before you. If you respect them, you might get the opportunity to get yourself exposed.”

  • Boddhi is hoping to be playing in South Africa by the end of this year and he is releasing his first ever album, after nine years in the business, very soon.
  • Leleti Khumalo’s album will be released next year.
  • If you happen to listen to he interview on the pod cast, some of his catch phrases are “Le me tell you something. To be honest with you, brothers and sisters.”
