Dr Rebecca Malope - The Queen Of Gospel
By Quibell Ramantswana , 30 Jan 2009Named by Nelson Mandela as his favourite singer, multi award winner Dr Rebecca Malope is South Africa’s greatest Gospel star. Over two decade before Kwaito music begun, It’s not hard to see why with her resonant, evocative voice Dr Rebecca has produced a staggering 29 hit albums.
“We started with Gospel,” Malope reveals to us. “We introduced our Gospel demo CD and they said to us, “Gospel is not doing well in South Africa, Gospel is not big in South Africa” and we had to go back and do disco songs which is called Kwaito music today. Back then we use to call it ‘Bubble gum’ music. But we made sure that each and every album that were released in Kwaito we put two or three songs of Gospel to introduce the type of Gospel that we want people to listen to in South Africa”.
“…our Gospel music will be known worldwide and people will love it.”
- Dr Rebecca Malope
The recent violence in Africa has affected everyone in Africa and around the world and is a time of reflection for many Africans including Dr Rebecca. “I believe all of us are people or children of God. If we can have one positive thinking by really respecting God, fearing God and knowing that God created all of us whether poor of rich. You need to start loving each other… it’s all about love and respect”.
Breaking the international market has always been tough for any star but Dr Rebecca appears very optimistic about the future for Gospel worldwide. “South African music has grown incredibly but breaking the international market is what everyone in the country is hoping for. With some people outside Africa getting to know our Gospel music it’s just a matter of time before we break it… “God said in his own words ‘everything has its own time’, our Gospel music will be known worldwide and people will love it”.
Having sold millions of records worldwide and having travelled the globe Dr Rebecca has achieved pretty much everything in music that any singer could wish for so does the Queen of Gospel have any aspirations left to achieve …?
“…want to be one of the biggest comedians as well!”
- Dr Rebecca Malope
“I want to spread my wings, I want to fly. I want people in Los Angeles, people all over America to be able to understand my music and really understand the message that I am giving them. And I want to be one of the biggest comedians as well!” she reveals to Joe and Q laughing. “I love comedy… doing gospel comedy. I’d rather do comedy but in a christian way”.
