Lekay’s Welcum Summer B/Day Bash

Concentrating: Dj Voo C
A friend told me once, “if u see a group of man beside a car, beer cans on the roof and loud music playing from the car”, the men are definitely Zimbabwean or South African. I did not argue, there was no point in doing so. She had studied the behaviours and graduated off the streets with an honorary degree in trend analysis.

So here I am in Milton Keynes. Don’t ask me how I got here. All I see are beer cans on top of cars, music blaring from cars, and a few men who look a bit, should I say wiser from the bottle. You see, I’m an old geezer now, and rowdy crowds cause me a bit of anxiety and distress. I am deciding whether to make an entrance or call it a day. I will scout the area, check the Dj’s out and maybe catch a snippet of the sound as customers enter and leave. I wasn’t about to spend ten pounds without a taster, personally I prefer no-like no-fee gigs, if the word ever exists.

“I have seen stars before, but here, right before my eyes I witnessed something new, something special, and something amazing”

Step forwards Mr “I know it all a.k.a I am telling.” I am told in no uncertain terms that this is the place to be, the shiznit, the dogs bollocks, the best gig in town. You see, Mr talkative over here does not know me but insists I need to be spending a tenner on his advice (the key word being need). “Who is playing,” I ask coyly. He spouts out a few names and somewhere in the middle of it all I think I hear the name Seun. The last time I heard that name I was in twilight, (for those who remember the nights) and if my memory serves me right I had a good night.

Fumbling through my pockets I pull out a tenner, walk straight towards the entrance and bravely declare, “One please.” it was a warm night and that word ‘Seun’ made my night warmer. I am finding it hard to believe that this is the same place I was looking at from the outside. I am thinking ‘Dr Who’s Tardis’ at this point. There is enough space for me to do my trade-mark Jive, which must be a good thing, right?

Enough Space To Do The Trade-Mark Jive
Talking about my trade-mark jive, I am walking towards the sound boy with a deliberate bounce. I like to see who is serving the beats out. Just a little habit I got into since a sound boy left with my nasty ex-girlfriend. At this point I am on cloud nine, not because I am not threatened by the sound boy, but because this boy is good. DJ Voo C, I think his name is. I have seen stars before, but here, right before my eyes I witnessed something new, something special, and something amazing. Why hadn’t anyone told me about Dj Voo C. I was upset. How could anyone who has had the pleasure of listening to this exciting young man sleep at night without spreading the gospel according to Dj Voo-C. Well, I may have been getting high on my own supply of yeast at this point, but I know talent when I see it and this was IT, the full shebang. His beats were tight, his mixing seamless and everyone was gyrating in a delightful manner. For a second I quietly slipped into 7th heaven.

“I wasn’t about to spend ten pounds without a taster, personally I prefer no-like no-fee gigs,…”

Now, I am thinking I need another beer. I am not Irish but I do enjoy my lagers. I do not take kindly to anyone attempting to levy a surcharge on my pint, not especially if I cannot find an off-license nearby to quench my thirst first. I must admit I arrived a bit late, say about 12 am. Surprisingly the prices are on point. Paranoia kicks in. I’m thinking, there must be a catch, spacious venue, brilliant Dj and cheap alcohol what else does a man need? Meat! Meat, that’s what a man needs.

As I trudge towards the boerwors stand I realise Dj Velly is at it. Now I must surely be dreaming. He is doing his thing and to be honest I am feeling him. He’s good, but give me Voo C anytime. I like the music, the mixing is ok, however I think I’ve heard it all before. Don’t get me wrong I like what he does but I am not about to write a long one with fancy superlatives addressed to a post office box somewhere in rural Africa.

I am the kind of man who does not take kindly to violence especially when it happens to me, and boy was I glad to see the bouncers. These are the sort of men who are made of concrete, tough as nails, and come with the “acid clean only,” label. The real issue was that the revellers were out to have a good time. It appeared as though everyone had either been listening to the nonviolent philosophy of Martin Luther King or reading up on the ‘velvet-revolution’ before presenting themselves to this place.

At this point the crowd is getting sort of bored. We need a change. I am secretly hoping Voo C steps up. However the powers that be decide Sky-Flex should have his turn. The mood lifted and everyone was back on the dance floor doing their thing. This was a solid session that could not be faulted. Good beats that got the crowd moving again. A bit of that Rihanna mix has never killed no-one. I was young once and a hustler as we called it. This time of the night we called ‘settling time.’ If you had your eyes on one or two ladies and they turned u down any lady would do at this point. A few man settled, as did the night.

Time for Seun to demonstrate his skills. I am expecting a tour de force, a show of might. This is what I have been talking about all night. Mobile phones are pulled out, camera’s click and the music sounds. Unfortunately we are told the police want the music off by three. I gaze at my watch it’s two minutes to three. I take my cue and exit stage left, that’s my night done. I hoped the missus had the decency to cook something exciting back home, I am starving.
