Is Black Coffee Truly South African?

Black Coffee with Vocalist Bucie

This question should have been asked of Ras ‘Nkosi Sikelel’ iAfrica’ Dumisani before his cataclysmic live singing of the South African National Anthem, in France, 2009.

Black Coffee’s musical global dominance has put his nationality into question by universal musical communities.

But It’s no longer confidential what the world thinks of African talent – actually one can be of the opinion that the world has always thought less of African talent. It has got to a period whereby if any African musical taste or talent gets recognition it has to be authorized by global media if it’s ‘Home Brewed’. As if Shakira’s
vocals in the official World Cup song has a home brewed flavour…

“This dude absolutely bowled us over, and definitely exceeded our anticipation”

Some people in Mzansi might have wondered about Black Coffee’s whereabouts during the South African Music Awards, this year. In fact, the ‘Soulistic Music’ boss was in the U.S. on a month tour in April – giving his insight to Americans how he has managed to turn the world on with his musical aptitude.
But to miss the SAMAs is not traditionally South African, especially if for a nominee.

It has to be said, for him to snub the SAMA honor in favour of the Americans could, predictably, have put questions to some local citizens.

Durban born Black Coffee has been damaging floors internationally with his incredible performance on the decks. His Turn-Me-On featuring Bucie track already commanded the U.K. dance floor; Trevor Nelson, a TV presenter and Radio 1-DJ has described Black Coffee as “the one to watch.”

Referring to Black Coffee as a hot drink is the thing of the past; the musical dictionary has already added another definition of Black Coffee, that is, South African music producer, Nathi Maphumula.

Adam Gibbons, who hosted one of Black Coffee’s events on his American tour in Allasia Bar, Cambridge described Nathi as a “special guest from South Africa.”

Black Coffee is officially a ‘Superman’ in Europe, let alone in American House music scene: “This dude absolutely bowled us over, and definitely exceeded our anticipation” says another party participant.

Speaking from South Africa, Black Coffee responded: “It’s shocking, man! I think it is because my music appeals everywhere, not just in South Africa.”

When you speak about Black Coffee in Europe – It might be in Italy, Spain,France, Portugal, Belgium, Russia or Iraq – one doesn’t have to speak their native languages for them to get it….Somehow his music helps us to understand each other.

Although there were some rumours across Europe – some people were still not convinced that such talent would come from South Africa. Fortunately, the
tittle-tattle reached my office, and I was quick to clear the air and confirm his nationality: Black Coffee is truly a South African.
