Jika Majika Seete
By Quibell Ramantswana , 29 Apr 2009 | One CommentAt the end of the apartheid in 1994 the award-winning ‘Book Shaka’s’ was formed.
The two women of the group Thembi Seete and the late Lebo Mathosa were the most widely known women of their time as two of the first females Kwaito artists, influencing the youth of South Africa with their looks, dance moves and music. Sadly the group split up in 2000 and they all pursued solo career.
“We were blessed, we performed everywhere… I don’t know how many times in the UK. We performed in Manchester, London and Denmark. It wasn’t all about fame, it wasn’t all about money. It was about seeing ourselves on stage doing what we love doing”.
“…She had all the qualities of being a superstar”.
The shock of the tragic death of Lebo Mathosa reverberated throughout the nation.
It felt particularly hard on Thembi. “It feels like it happened yesterday… I still don’t understand how it happened so quickly. It still doesn’t make sense but only God knows. She was special, talented, and powerful and she could sing like nobody’s business; she had all the qualities of being a superstar”.
Thembi went onto pursue an acting career and featured in the film ‘Hijack stories’ and popular drama series’ including Yizo Yizo and Gaz’lam. She’s currently presenting the successful number one SABC music dance show ‘Jika Majika’.
“…that’s the reason to stay in power”
The music industry is a fickle business and few artists stand the test of time. Having been in the business for over a decade so what’s on Thembi’s menu to stay to at the top?
“Take care of yourself; you have to look good, eat well, drink water, train-you must go to the gym and you must sleep, please! read positive things, be focused, be happy, smile a lot and pray like it’s nobody’s business. That’s the reason to stay in power.”
Thembi’s new album ‘Music is my Life’ will be released at the end of May. She worked with DJ Cleo, Black Coffee and Tira to name but a few.
