Kwaito’s Zombo is dead

By Zinhle Mapumulo ( Sowetan) , 18 Feb 2008

Once popular Kwaito star Tebogo Ndlovu, also known as Zombo, has died after a long illness.

The former Abashante band member died yesterday of HIV/AIDS related illness. At the time of his death Zombo was living at St Francis Care Center in Benoni on the East Rand. He was admitted to the hospice on Monday last week with the help of his former boss, Arthur Mafokate, who started a benefit fund for the ailing kwaito star.

Zombo publicly disclosed his HIV status during an exclusive interview with Sunday World newspaper early this year. He discovered he was living with the HIV virus last year.

Two weeks ago he accused Mafokate on national television of not intervening early when his health deteriorated. But he also thanked his former boss for starting a benefit fund for him.

Mofokate was first to arrive at Zombo’s home in Alexandra yesterday.

Thandi Ndlovu, Zombo’s older sister said: “We loved him as a family and took care of him during his ailing moments. We were all hoping that when he comes back from the hospice he would be better,” said Ndlovu. The funeral will held on Saturday at a time and venue still to be decided.
