Legendary kwaito musician Mdu Masilela has helped an HIV-positive couple to realise their dream of getting married.

The two lovebirds, Stefaan Matimane and Ruby Molefi, who met at a public gathering two years ago, are exchanging vows today at Lefatula Street in Vosloorus, Ekurhuleni.

Matimane, who has been living with HIV for the past 15 years, says he is very happy to finally get married.

“Even if people are not infected by the disease, like Matimane and his wife, they should realise that they are nevertheless affected by it.”

He tells Sunday World that most people infected with HIV-Aids don’t understand that they can lead a normal life as long as they take care of themselves.

“When I tested HIV-positive people’s attitudes towards me changed – but that did not stop me from living my life the way I wanted to,” Matimane says.

He says p eople are very judgmental when it comes to people who have tested HIV-positive, like him and his lover, but that won’t depress them.

He says what Mdu has done to make their wedding possible is no small thing and they will never forget it.

Matimane says he and his wife-to-be are deeply grateful to Mdu for making their dream come true.

Mdu, of Mazola fame, has given R10000 towards Matimane’s ilobola and wedding.

Mdu, known by his fans as the godfather of kwaito, says: “People should change their negative attitude towards HIV-positive people.

“Even if people are not infected by the disease, like Matimane and his wife, they should realise that they are nevertheless affected by it.”

Mdu and officials of the Ekurhuleni municipality have been visiting workplaces to motivate people to go for HIV testing so that they know their status.

He says: “I was so touched by how freely Matimane talked about his status in public.

“He approached me and asked me to help out with his wedding and I agreed to do so.”

He met Matimane during an HIV-Aids campaign.

On his silenced music career, Mdu says he is making a comeback.

He will be releasing a compilation of his hit songs this week.
