POST-MORTEM-Globalsoul Party featuring Manoo
By Brown Sugar , 21 Apr 2009 | (81) Comments
The Legendary ManooDearly beloved, we are gathered (or rather logged on) here to remember the very short life of the GlobalSoul party featuring the legendary Manoo. The GB party as we shall call it lived at Fusion Bar in Birmingham between the hours of 10pm on Saturday 11 April 2009 and 4am the following Sunday morning although the exact time of death is debatable.
The procession was led by chief-mourners Roots O’Batala and Bluesoul (Nqaba) although Manoo unexpectedly found himself belonging to this group as well.
Ok, now that the tone is adequately set, let’s get down to business. The Manoo gig, as you may have guessed was not a funeral but left me with the same sadness nonetheless. To give props to the organizers, the venue was brill - think minimalist contemporary in earthy tones with a satisfying scattering of eclectic pieces such as bamboo lamp fittings and several chocolate leather couches. The neighbourhood itself was more than a little dodge though. Overall, it could have been a night to remember, but as it sadly turned out, not for the greatest of reasons.
“…Yes, the man definitely knows his way around a mixer …”
Bo-darkie, why do we insist on continuing to live up to our worst stereotypes? I think it’s very bad taste that a well-known DJ and promoter (in the UK anyway) spent so much time and effort scrubbing up, being driven to Birmingham to show his support only to stand outside for hours on end telling all who care to listen what a disaster it was!! Where is the love in that? I think it’s in every promoters interest to support the next guy because if his gig is a success then the whole industry benefits. Guess you can take a man out of ekasi, but a kasi mentality never dies!
Moving swiftly along to the good folks that did pay their ten quid and went inside, the best dressed award goes to the Men in Black, Thamu, Zola and Keith. Nice threads gentlemen, pity there weren’t enough members of the fairer sex to bring that message across. You definitely got a few appreciative looks from the Sugarbabes crew who were there in full effect in their mandatory thigh stockings and Louboutin-like platforms.
First on the decks was Nqaba but this is just hearsay as I overheard the man himself saying he played to an empty house. Press on guy, these things happen. Next in line was Roots whose set included some great Break-beats but for the love of all things deep, why did he insist on taking mixer effects 10 miles too far? Yes, the man definitely knows his way around a mixer but an effect is just that, an effect, not the entire 12 inch track.
“…the “jiva yoyo” circle was formed, twalatsa came to the fore and when I saw a third cake-cutting move performed, my heart sank a little”
Much head-bobbing later, the big friendly giant Manoo finally took his rightful place at the decks. He started his set as a DJ/Producer of his calibre should by adjusting the bpm accordingly so he could take the crowd on his own personal journey, throwing in some fine Black Coffee pieces for good measure. Just as he was catching fire, the poor man made the mistake of playing Thandiswa’s Kwanele and the (house-head) sheepskins came off, “Hee, hee, mina ng’thandi deep kuphela”….whatever!! In the blink of an eye the “jiva yoyo” circle was formed, twalatsa came to the fore and when I saw a third cake-cutting move performed, my heart sank a little. Maybe I’m alone on this but I was expecting to hear some new house releases, the kind being currently hyped by the industry kings in Miami as the big Spring/Summer tracks; Kwanele was definitely the last thing I thought I’d hear. Please note, I love the song as much as the next person but personally don’t think he should have played it, considering his set was so short anyway. The fact that he had to go to such lengths in order to stir the crowd speaks volumes about the crowd itself.
Luckily, the young lass on Levi’s arm came to my rescue because after she whispered something in Manoo’s ear, he remembered what he’s about and dropped four or five deep tracks. Yes Manoo’s set was a bit all over the place but I blame three things. Firstly, the promoters didn’t do enough to “signal” or introduce him to the crowd. Secondly, the crowd did not appreciate his music, they didn’t listen and hear. And last but not least, I believe the sound system or lack thereof greatly compromised him, 2 speakers only? Not for a full tank of petrol and ten quid entrance fee Globalsoul, credit crunch or not!
To add insult to injury, Manoo played for just over an hour only and then Roots took over again, but not before being interrupted by a visibly inebriated Nqaba. At this point, I decided to call it a morning and start the short journey home. So all in all, a potentially great evening but the hater antics and poor organisation were a let-down. Don’t blame it on the lack of attendance; when two or more gather for the love of music it shall be declared a gig. A round-up of the scores
-
• Venue ****
• Sound quality **
• Value for money **
• Crowd *
• Supporting DJs ** (one star for each of them)
• Main Guest *** (A lot of things were working against him so this rating is mainly based on his reputation and only partially on the little he managed to do on the night)

Wow, girl in black dress. you are good!!!! bo doubt. i am waiting for the next global soul gig. i liked it last time and will go again. i dont know the point of this article to be honest, and why now and this site! so cheap. i know Roots and Manoo and no dissing Nqaba (as i think he has stepped in the right direction with the right people) are well established and known in the game globally besides some interviews of them and hearing their music and mixes, i like how they is private and undeground. > I havent heard sooo much said about one person or one single gig than this cheap, garden strolling, a*** itching writing article. < besides the discussion about that ****** dude ripping artists and people, this is the worse time wasting article on this site but thinking about it, there is nothing going on for this site besides advertising the same shows we know le some cheap every week mix a wannabe dj puts on here and sh*t mixing and track selection. Editor is this how you want your site to be? if so, wow, you are too desparate to go leave it live! dont take the article off; just take the whole site off. its off my visting list. AMEN
@SKOBO loool..careful wat you wish for..uzazisola!…@MDU I dont think u have anything personal against me bra..As for the use of Post mortem.it has been used inappropriately !!..SORRY!! u cant claim you are a critique.. go and speak about what other people are doing name them..which I think he had da AUDACITY to do so!! then go reference wat they are doing to a death,,thats too shallow..VULGAR..its lame and painful for the reader taking into account that wat u are doing yourself is wat needs a funeral!! people need to check themselves..KNOW yourplace and your level before you open your mouth and try to gurgle not even speak about wat other people are doing..If you cant do any better..give positive critique or say something to motivate them…you better off keeping your mouth closed..cause ungawuvula kuzangena impukane!! Listen the guy can open his mouth and talk about what other people do..till the south and north pole meet..till the donkeys become horses..I DONT CARE! The content of this article like i said is emotional and extremely opinionated…It is possible to criticize in a positive way - in order to spur someone to improve and better themselves. This so called discussion is far from that..INSTEAD IT IS A POINTLESS SATIRE!!
im no writer but wat i know is, an article has an catchy title, dis one is catchy rite and sends da msg dat manoo is death, addin to dat they used a black and white pic to emphasize da title, den come da intro and da first paragraph dat tells da reader bout da article, the first sentence confirms dat manoo is dat, dats how i concluded by jst readin and lookin at da pic, for me dats a very very bad intro coz da article is not a bout death.
wat makes it worse is dat da article mentions nothing about ppl havin fun. frm fb i sw pics of ppl dancin wich i assume u didnt like coz u mentioned sugar babes.
and i must say, mdu is da writer of dis article, he is as destructive as dis article, and his style of words matches da article, read all his comments and read da article again and again there is a lot of similarities on it.
how come 90% of da comments made r against dis article, dis is no mistake, ppl hav spoken. jst like on big brother, ppl were angry about some house mate and sometin was done about it.
and pls mdu dont use my example of big brother to say how does it link up to dis article ok. i kno ur brain is located in ur genitals mate. mdu wrote dis article fact. ppl mdu is da writer
If you say I am the writter I will take that as a complement. But Honest , I am not the writter. You can check my comments around the site, I just seem to be so different from the majority (there are not too may genious around you know lol!!!). GIRL IN BLACK DRESS, why are you getting yourself involved in a POINTLESS SATIRE? I donot think it’s a pointless satire and hence the reason I am involved in this discussion.
Mdu you are to much, get a life. You are either the owner of the site or the writter. You seem to keep tabs on everything.
Thanks for the compliment Mdu (croydon). No, he’s not the writer, I am.
And again, thanks for the comments..this has achieved almost what I aimed to- get you lovely people talking. Nt happy about the fixation with the website and negativity though but we have to start somewhere.
Catch me next time as I review another gig.
Brownee!
Mdu is ur sidekick thn brown suga or iz jst publicly licking ur arse..ziningi izindlela zokucela umsebenzi..y’all wil make a gud couple..u belong 2getha..
lol!! uyazi Iyoo uyisiphoxo sibili, mina I do girls only; no way engingaba lo Brown Sugar. I know we are in England man; but …that is bit to much man. man donot do man.
LOL….Mdu is the writer and you know i know you are. you waited as i told you, someone will accuse you and you will jump to it like a horse. you were the first to comment after the article and also when someone is accused you jump right up and defend. girl in black dress. you are hot, nice one. i am sure we will or most of us will go to the next global soul gig and see all those who commented here. mdu, waiting for you to defend again…you know you will and i know i know you. fool all of them but not me. you aim was not for them to talk but was to say what you wanted to say about the gig and all you felt about it which in a simple term as you said ””jealous and being a moron really (oh meaning…brainless - dictionary that as well). go on, speak..this is your home son.
Mina I vote that uMdu is the writter.
me too misterious, i defo bliev mdu is da writer.
Bantu, please leave me alone; mina I paid a tenner(shame on those who paid £15 for advanced tickets which where then not valid) and went to listen to Vetkuk and Mahoota.
Tickets where not valid there and the whole thing was as people on this website had said very disorganised; Artists did not turning up as people had predicted and so on and on so…. I have no clue who Thamu,Zola and Keith are, I have no clue who this famous dj from London who drove all the way is. How would I know about every details to as minor as the lighting….. I actually hadn’t realised how observant Sugar Brown is as well. It’s called Attention to Details….lol!! All I am backing here is the article which I like, its well written. The mentioned Djs have lots of fans who will not tolerate these kind of articles; fair enough. There were enough London gigs on that weekend; I didnot have to go to Birmingham and besides Deep House is not my first choice when it come to music; Who ever wrote this article really loves deep, impressed when Manoo played 4 deep tracks. “mina ngithanda deep kuphela…” This is one the deep house guys; I suspect a certain G, whom I know to be a good writter and is one of the few who would come up with such a good article.
Girl in blackdress, where will u be this wknd? Gimme a hint atleast…ijooo Ng’yak’thanda blind. The way you write is almost lyk i see yo attractivenes as much as yo i read yo attractive writting skill. Can u pls be the reviewer of next gigs..Ung’shaya ngaphakathi nje heart beat yazi!
wena MDU,uyangisukela “i knw a certain G who happens to be a good writer”nxa! anyone who would hide behind a sudo name is obviously in hiding for a reason. alas, he lacks tact; “the young lass in levi’’s arm” his wife phew! imagine if it weren”t. i take offense in being associated with such mediocrity, if there was ever a reason to bring self into the game. it is here and now, glad i”m sadly missed. shame i wont be back and nobody can take advantage of that.
A question to the site owner…Do u make money from the number of hits ur site gets?? If dats da case u must be loaded this week, this article has given ur site hits it never had and will never receive. Take advantage..By the way the journalist can come and review my befday party in Brum Sept..feat urs truly Global Soul: Roots and Uchikawa(Asante Records). Special invite in advance, we”ll see if u have any crap to write about den. In the meantime keep attending Global Soul gigs to review, we appreciate ur £10 quid…it does buy a double JD and coke after all hey!! Good luck with all ur future work by the way Kwaito.co.uk..I”m sure u have good intentions with ur site, but u just barked up a wrong tree this time shem. Just an unfortunate choice of journalist/gig reviewer
I like how this article has turned into another facebook chat lool.. SOULLADY!!! they barked up the wrong tree..tite lyrics!!@SKOBO..hmmm mina ngiyadula angitholakali..I dont mind helping these guys review the next gig..I can do it for free..@ MDU Kanti wawuvele ukhona yini kumbe uzwa nge NDUMELA!!! I am for freedom of speech… If someone has something to say, give them the platform to do so, we live in a democratic country, yes?! However in this instance, criticism is only acceptable if it comes with solutions as well. It’s straight pointless to flap and yap your gums and end there. Identify the flaw, suggest a remedy and apply it, then we could all be farting rainbows the nxt day! Selektaa…nice one! Silence can””t be misquoted! Peace Keeper, well spoken… BlueSoul welcome to the grind, as well as Asante Records, this is what it is….the parallel market as I call it. Let”’’s see what tomorrow olds for us.
Thanx to everyone that’s making an ffort into building, entertaining and maintaining our very small, but very fragile southrn african community of deep house within UK.I would also lyk 2 give some Big ups, once again 2 Nqaba & Roots for their effort putting up such gig during easter hol’s.Im sure the nxt attempt will & should be a succes.
Nqabs welcome 2 the real world bru.Positive critism will build u,negetive ones will either make u much stronger or seriously destroy u.But u must check where the critism comes frm,is it some1 with worthy experience & knowledge with the industry & music,or just some1 seeking fame & being opportunistic thru ones failures & downfalls.U must also be ware that for every succesful individuals, there will always be some1/ppl who will be negetive, and thats when yo indefatigability & character is put to test.
I personaly will suggest that if anyone who claims or aims to be a reporter or any individual who has any personal positive or negetive comments, kindly send them privately to the concerned dj/promoter/producer,to get approval 1st, just for the sake of safeguarding those who can be very sensitive, young yet good & promising Southrn djs/promoters/producers.
For crying out loud,we all here to develop and fullfill our passions in a foreign country loaded of opportunities. If one is seeking fame or being an opportunist by being negetive or publicly issuing such comments ,pls spare it on locals(britons) who can afford, and who have a wider audience to work on.Potential southrn Afrcn deep house community we r working is now far less than 1000,and is shrinking every week & month, due to current economical & immigration laws.
It will be so said to see aspiring/young & very talented House dj/producers/promoters go down due to certain individual who might think they r doing it for the best while its counterproductiv on the other person.
Can we 4a second,be CONSIDERATE and be very positive of big efforts by our fellow southrn djs/promoters/producers,especially those who are making effort to give us QUALITY with PASSION.Keep minor negetivities 2yoself if u cant privately approach the dj/promoter/producer.
Bongz, i wanted to take pic with you and Manoo on dat nyt. u looked like brothers frm the same mother, lol.Otherwise Keep it up Blue soul & Global soul, let there be SOUL!!
Lastly,on behalf of SLICK, thanx a million tyms to those who made SLICK’s ALL BLACK NYT,a crazy nyt in Brum on sats, inspite of the peak of global recession.Ngiyabonga mina!
You have got a sensible argument there Selekta.
Wow…a sensible argument. it understimating where you say nqabs welcome to the real world, c’mon. what is meant by the next attempt will be a success, what is success. as a said above i was at the party and didnt see what was wrong with the party, if we say to us bo ma darkie, a successfull party is when there are many people then we need to grow. I havent read this article since my last comment and now i see people leeching on it and saying all things to their benefits. and also ‘positive criticism will build you’ read or send the above article to anyone who can read and educated, it is not any criticism of any form, it is pure jealousy and comdenming. Grow u you lot, you are destroying yourselves. the all black party was good as well as many i have attended as i attend most of the sa parties here and will always support anyone doing somoething good.
Causin Yakhe’s comment temporary deleleted, unfair comment in referance to Grimalde.
Comment is being reviewed.
Admin: may i have that comment sent to me or published, i have no fear of insults or criticism.
freedom of speech, allow it and we’ll see if they can stand up to a public onslaught. i dare he who has no cause to insult my person and think they will have it easy. infact they should balls up and show themselves.
most of you here are writing in worry of your identities to be revealed because then you can be senseless and be i***ts unknown to most, cowardice.
respect to those that have attached their identities to the articles, showing no fear and bias to such…
if england should be allowed to ban terrorists, extremists and hate clerics then surely i will have you banned in most events
Brown Sugar, show yourself young lady or would it be too much slander to reveal your name. Take pride for your opinion and let people step up and ask your motivation and rightfully ban you from their gigs.
I am very dissapointed by Samkelo Ngwenya
he may denie all this….but we all know that he is behind all this….
1-Kwaito.co.uk never attracted poeple
2-attention seeker
3-this is not proffesional
Till today I still dont understand why did you do this….hate me if you like
but we all know…..Amen!
Pumla, stop being a wanker and get of our tits, who r u anyways? were u ever abused as a child? or is it that u just prefer talking through ur backside, we as the audience of this site prefer a well balanced unbiased article. who the effing hell r u? If u don’t like the article tough, get over it.If u want to do a, “F*** me I am famous” this is not the place.
Playground Bully, Pumla is actually a girl…lol!!! I am not sure about he wanker part
Mdu, do i care? lol. Nways, i guess i will have to say thanks for the correction. U know what gets me with people like Pumla? they make friends and anyone who attempts to expose theirfriends for the rubbish they feed us as fans are attacked.
i have been to many a show and trust me when i say most of them are sub-standard. We need critic’’s who do not fear being victimised to enable us to make informed judgements on which gig’’s to attend and which not to attend. there is a credit crunch out there and making easy money by peddling rubbish to a unsuspecting audience is out of fashion. We need people like BrownSugar to encourage the promoters to raise their game hence delivering value for money.
Everyone goes on about supporting our own. How could be keep supporting them when they line their already fat pockets with our hard earned cash and we get no joy from the perfomances? They need to wake up, everybody needs support. They could start by reducing their ticket prices and putting on good shows. i do not feel sorry for them.
BROWNSUGAR KEEP THE ARTICLES ROLLING. MR ADMINISTRATOR, KEEP PUBLISHING THEM.
AM I BEING UNREASONABLE? LOL!!!!
