Sdunkero scoop SAMA’s Best Record Award
By Lebohang Mpede , 07 May 2008DJ Sdunkero, real name Dumisane Kunene, walked away with SAMA’s Best Record of the Year Award on Saturday night for his hit “Maputo Song”.The award winning Maputo song is from his 10 track album Edladleni Volume 1 released in 2007. The “Maputo song” was formed after he met up with a Bass Guitarist from Maputo.
Given the nominees for the award it was always going to be a tough decision, but I will put my hands up and say Sdunkero was the last person I thought would win it. I personally would have voted for Lira (I love that girl)and yet now that Sdunkero‘s Maputo song has won it is very easy to understand why.
The Maputo song has arguable no vocals and no chorus and yet if you have seen the response of the crowds when it’s played at clubs you will understand why it won the award voted for by the public, the people’s award.
I unfortunately cannot make an intellectual argument for the “Maputo song” but if one listens to it they can appreciate the exceptionality of the song, weather there will love it or not is another story.
Sdunkero - Maputo Song
Sdunkero told MIO he initially didn’t feel the song; he then tried the tune at a gig he was playing at and to his surprise, the response was phenomenal. “I included the song in my set and people went wild.”
To Sdunkero and all the fans who voted for him Congratulations, you have put Mpumalanga and Mzansi house on the spot .
The Mzansi house market has been growing exponentially over the past few years. I believe Mzansi house is the logical next step for kwaito as it stands a better chance of success in the international market and we hope Sdunkero exposure wil help in that front.
Sdunkero, a DJ and Producer, is currently a resident DJ on Ligwalagwala FM’s Power Play. Taking a slot every Saturday from 18h00 to 21h00, the show features the latest house music and mixes from DJ in Mozambique and Swaziland.
Best Kwaito Album was won by Brickz for Estokfeleni (Ghetto Ruff)
