Dj Christo:The God Father Of House MusicWhen the house music scene was becoming popular in South Africa, over two decade ago, there was only a few DJ’s at the time, and DJ Christos was one of them.
Looking at how many talented DJ’s the country has produced over the years, one has to give credit to the legendary God-Father of house music, DJ Christos.
Not that the audience only enjoy his music. His performance, every time he plays his set, is incredible .
“I am always on fire, it’s in my blood.” says the Mafia of house music
The self pro-claimed ‘Mafia of house music’ influenced and provided platforms for numerous DJ’s and producers; He is credited for the current flourish in the South African House music scene.
“The South African music scene is growing. We have some awesome talent out here [and] we’re really touching the world at the moment.”
Having been in the music industry for 23 years, it takes a lot of guts and determination to stay that long. During those years DJ Christos has produced some of the biggest tracks of the recent past, including Boom Shaka “Free” DJ’s at work, Ratanang, and last year’s smash hit ‘Uyangichomela’ to name but a few. What does someone have to do to last that long?
“The fact that we haven’t lost our roots, means that we are still captured within the true house music.”
“I think it’s believing and taking brakes, that’s what I did. It took me a very long time to build a name. I believe a good DJ must make hits, get a new song, and make it a hit. Don’t just make a song for people to play it.”
“You need to be involved in the music industry and grow musically; It doesn’t matter how big you are, there is always something to learn, even from the younger [DJ’s] who are coming up. It’s not all about technical ability; its all about music.”
When Katsaistic music label owner, DJ Christos, met his long time friend and partner, Vinny Da Vinci back in 1995 in Johannesburg, where Christos used to be a residence DJ at Caesar’s Palace, in Braamfontein, that formed the roots of what is now one of South Africa’s most dominant genre, deep house music. Since then, the duo’s work has culminated with the formation of “DJ’s at work” and won numerous awards. They played almost everywhere across the world together. It’s really hard to talk about Christos without mentioning Vinny. So how does one compare the two legends at work, given that they always work together?
“Vinny likes to keep it deep. I like the same stuff, but I always play a little bit harder, especially towards the end of my set. We do enjoy the same music and that’s why we click, and do things together. We have been together for a very long time.”
Christos has established himself as a world class DJ and producer. He has played along side the world known DJ’s, Little Louis Vega, Franck Rodger, Dennis Ferrer, just to name a few. His record label has also sees international success with releases from Real tone records and Go Go music. Indeed, South African house music has caught the attention of the world.
“The fact that we haven’t lost our roots, means that we are still captured within the true house music. A lot of DJ’s, internationally, like the rooted South African set. South Africa is becoming slowly, but surely, the music capital of the world”
