Malaika , one of the first break through afro pop groups in South Africa, will once again perform at London’s Stratford Rex.

The gig which is to take place this coming weekend (Sat 21 November 2009), will see the South Africans play alongside the might Oliver Mtukudzi.

To put it more precisely Tuku and Malaika will be going head to head.

Tuku who has been in the music industry since the 70s has performed numerous times in London. One of his most memorable London performances was at the London Jazz Festival at the Royal Festival Hall.

Tuku , who has been performing for more than 3 decades , plays many different styles of music based on the Marimba. His music has significant pop influences and catch phrases.

The pop influences captivate a younger generation, while the marimbas have a clearly defined african sound that triggers a dance (or may be two) in the older generation. This unique ability to enterntain different generations within the same music makes Oliver one of the best african musicians the world over.

Malaika on the other hand will be launching their new albums “Mmatswale”. Talking of Malaika’s 4th album I cannot help but appreciate the effort and skill put into compiling it.

On this album Malaika have keep their old formulae, which is sure to go down well with faithful fans. The album has a little surprised in the form of some “housie” tracks, you know , the ones with an electro-edge.

To make this album the ultimate Afro Pop album there is even a kwaito like rhyme and sounds inspired by Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Nigeria to name but a few countries.

Even with so many influences the album has that special Malaika touch, thanks to the reliable producer Guffy (Godfrey Pilane), who worked on the album.

But before I lose track, my point here is if Malaika’s latest album is anything to go by, then their London Gig is not to be missed.

Oliver Mtukudzi is a living legend and an opportunity to watch him perform live should be grabbed with both hands.

Two big afro pop acts at the same venue … well I hope there is enough room for every one…. get your ticket now to secure your place.
