Magebz – Mzansi Hip Pop is taking over

Born in Durban as Nkululeko Nxasana, Magebz is bringing a new Dimension to South African Music. In a very energetic interview with “The Mzansi Show”, Magebz expressed his pleasure at the standard of Mzansi Hip Pop and a great passion for his country, South Africa.

Magebz, who is the owner of Blaqk records, says “Hip pop is taking over”. To support his statement the talented Magebz was quick to point out that hip-hop is within the top 10 of the Metro FM 2008 Award categories. And to drive his point home he referred to the fact that some hip pop artists are outselling some of the kwaito artist.

“We need to find our own sound then be able to export that to other nations so that when they buy something from South Africa they know it’s from South Africa.”
-Magebz

Challenged on the comparison usually made between Mzansi Hip Hop and American Hip Hop, Magebz said, “We need to find our own sound then be able to export that to other nations so that when they buy something from South Africa they know it’s from South Africa.”

This is something Magebz has easily achieved on his latest album “The Passion”. The album is clearly Mzansi and most of the tracks hardly reflect any western influence and yet they are still distinctly hip hop.Even Magebz’s dressing is still pure “kasi” and bling is not something he ever liked.

Even though he was born is Durban, Nkululeko did his higher education in Pretoria and has also lived in Soweto. His singing career officially started when he signed a contract with a Sony Licensed Label called Streetwise at the age of 15.Streetwise went into liquidation and things didnot work out. The determined Magebz, who has worked with Hip Hop Panstula, opened his first record label after high school in Pretoria.

After a career break Nxasana is now back and is redefining Urban Mzansi Music, if the latest releases from Blaqk are anything to go by. One of Blaqk’s highly rated artists Emza has recently released a fourteen track album entitled “Nswelaboyo”. The Blaqk Records boss is also signing a female house Dj to release an album sometime next year. Another artist signed to the label is Okapi.

Magebz, who will not be deterred from his Hip pop, explicitly stated to “The Mzansi Show” that no matter what happens to his hip pop career he will not do a “Mafokate” and jump ship to house.

Mabegz also opened up to any ladies who are single.Ask on his marital statues Magebz naughtly giggled before answering ” I am single my man”.
