The 10th Metro FM Music Awards held at the Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela (Nelspruit) at the weekend gave Mpumalanga the confidence to host any other event of this calibre, if it wants to.

The weather agreed and Mbombela was a beautiful host. The black-and-white carpet had celebrities dressed up to the hilt, but Generations’ Katlego Danke had to be the best dressed in her black and lacy mini-dress. She even had the camermen zooming in on her butt, right where the lacy seam of her outfit began.

David Tlale looked suave in his short pants suit and slightly shorter haircut, exposing smooth shaved legs we hardly ever see. He follows his own rules and manages to create his own style all the time. But could someone please tell the fashionistas and celebrities that sunglasses at night is actually a stupid look.

“It was a pity that artists, although supported by backing vocalists and live instruments, used back tracks.”

The crowd went crazy for the soapie stars, especially Seputla Sebogodi, who was one of the award presenters on the night.

They went gaga for DJ Cleo, Tira, HHP and any other famous artist simply because events like these don’t happen a lot in Mpumalanga. A Joburg crowd would have been a little subtle or more pretentious.

The staging of the show was simple and elegant for the outdoor event this was and a perfect platform for live music. The hosts, Metro FM’s Azania Ndoro and DJ Sbu, did their job as best as could be expected.

It was a pity that artists, although supported by backing vocalists and live instruments, used back tracks. Perhaps it was a technical precaution, but it threw improvisation out the window, making it blatantly obvious when the great and lovable Judith Sephuma wasn’t singing according to the original track, for example.

The best performance of the night was a medley of kwaito and dance hits which had the crowd on their feet, featuring the Afrotainment crew: DJ Fisherman, Tira, Big Nuz with L’vovo Derango and DJ Cleo. And when Arthur came on stage to present the Best kwaito award, he made sure he reminded everybody about the forthcoming kwaito awards.

Zakes Bantwini also charmed the crowd with his electric moves in his shiny purple suit. He’s got a personality fit for the stage.

To celebrate 10 years, the show included an extra-special category, Song of the Decade, which was won by Mafikizolo for their hit, Ndihamba Nawe. This might remind the duo of their contribution to SA music and prompt them to get back in the studio. Time will tell.

Four artists – Simphiwe Dana, Black Coffee, DJ Kent and Phila Mazibuko (former Live field presenter and new kid on the Afro-pop block) – dominated this year and there were worthy wins.

Dana took home Best Female Artist and Best Contemporary Jazz Album for her album Kulture Noir and these were her first Metro wins. Black Coffee took Best Produced Album and Best Dance Album for Home Brewed.

Kent won Hit Single of the Year and Best Collaboration of the Year for the song Let’s Fall In Love Again featuring Relo.

Mazibuko got Best Styled Artist. Other notable wins included Malik’s Best African Pop for his hard work on the album Mthulise.

But the night easily belonged to the humble Durban kwaito artist Professor who, besides featuring among the performances, bagged two awards: Best Kwaito Album for University of Kalawa and Song of the Year for Jezebel – a summer/ festive favourite for 2010.

So far, the popular Metros have travelled to Gauteng (Joburg and Pretoria), Durban and The Nelson Mandela Bay in Port Elizabeth. We’ll wait to see where the party goes to next year.

  3. What the Hell is this? Why you always take people from MP for Granted? FYI the event was attended by MP people who Resides in GP so what you trying to say is that only people from JOZI attend this kind of events? “They went gaga for DJ Cleo, Tira, HHP and any other famous artist simply because events like these don’t happen a lot in Mpumalanga.
